Tall condo for Queenston Road could be trendsetter for area

- KEVIN WERNER

Hamilton council has approved what will be one of the tallest buildings on Queenston Road.

Members of the planning committee gave the green light Tuesday to a 14-storey building at 928 Queenston Rd. at Lake Avenue Drive that will have 160 units and 173 parking spots.

There will be commercial space on the ground floor of the development. The location already contains Stoney Creek Collision Centre, a two-storey car repair garage. The owner, Marfad Holdings Inc., is planning to demolish the structure.

“I think this area will see growth,” said Stoney Creek Coun. Doug Conley, who supported the project. “Stoney Creek needs the growth. I know it backs onto some people’s (properties). But I think the community will benefit.”

One resident told councillors she was opposed to the development

because of the height, which will eliminate her privacy and contribute to increased traffic concerns. A GO train station is under construction not far away at Centennial Parkway North.

Ward 5 Coun. Chad Collins, whose ward is near the property, said the current number of councillors are not opposed to higher densities in the commercial area of Stoney Creek. But residents in the area have questioned whether

the development will lead to future highrise developments.

City planner Adam Lucas said “each application is judged on its merits.”

But he suggested that, if the 14-storey application is approved by council on Sept. 26, other proposals could be submitted that could match the height.

“It does give a glimpse as to what staff will support on applications,” he said. “It all depends on the merits of the application.”
