Cyclist suffers life-threatening injuries in Glanbrook collision

-

A 68-year-old cyclist is in hospital in lifethreatening condition after being struck by a vehicle early Tuesday morning in Glanbrook.

Emergency crews were called around 6:40 a.m. for reports of a man struck on a foggy stretch of Trinity Church Road between Dickenson Road East and Pinehill Drive.

The Hamilton man had been cycling south on Trinity Church and stopped to turn left on Golf Club Road when he was rear-ended by a vehicle driven by a 50year-old Hamilton man, said Hamilton police Const. Lorraine Edwards.

Police are investigating if weather played a role in the collision, said Edwards, noting it was dark and foggy at the time of the crash and the roads were slightly wet.

The cyclist was not wearing a helmet but had a headlamp on his head and a small flashing red light on his bicycle, she said.

The collision reconstruction unit, which responds to serious crashes involving injury or death, has been called in to investigate.

Speed and alcohol have been ruled out as factors in the crash, Edwards said.

That stretch of Trinity Church road remained closed throughout the morning but re-opened early Tuesday afternoon, she said.

Later in the day, a cyclist was struck by a vehicle near King Street West and Breadalbane Street, near the 403-Toronto bound ramp, just before 1 p.m. The cyclist suffered a leg injury, Edwards said.
