Where is the respect for Saltfleet football?

RE: While football thrives ... (Sept. 28)

Kudos to Steve Milton on his article and his interest in the state of high school football in our city.

My grandson is playing football for the Saltfleet Storm. I attend most of his practices and all of his games. Mr. Milton’s article comes at a very opportune time and touches on several issues that I myself have noticed.

First and most important is the dedication and devotion shown by both the players and the coaches. It is unfortunate however, and I am specifically referring to Saltfleet here, that they are not shown the same dedication by the board. The field at this school is deplorable and unsafe. The track surrounding the field is a tripping hazard. The field can only be used for practices and all games are away games.

I have attended games at Westmount, Sherwood and Churchill. The first two fields were grass and acceptable, Churchill is a fantastic facility with synthetic turf, scoreboard and bleachers. Coincidentally this school is where I noticed the most support for the team by fellow students, parents and faculty. Perhaps there is a message here.

Finally, I recall the days when a football game was a big day at school. Students were encouraged to attend to show school spirit and support. They were given time away from class but attendance at the game was compulsory. What happened?
