Another honour for HPO conductor Gemma New
Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra music director Gemma New has been named principal guest conductor of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra in Texas.
“Gemma is one of the most exciting young conductors active on the international stage today,” Dallas Symphony Association president Kim Noltemy said in making the announcement.
New, a native of New Zealand, will conduct two weeks of concerts in Dallas during the orchestra’s 2019/20 season and three more in the 2020/21 season.
HPO executive director Diana Weir said New’s appointment in Dallas would have no impact on her position in Hamilton where she is under contract until 2021.
New is active as a guest conductor worldwide, appearing with the Auckland Philharmonia and Christchurch Symphony in New Zealand.
In North American, New has conducted the Detroit, New Jersey, San Diego and Toronto Symphony orchestras, as well as the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, the Grant Park Music Festival Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic.
Her guest conducting in Europe includes engagements with various European orchestras. Among them, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the Helsingborg and Malmö Symphony orchestras, the Szczecin Philharmonic, the Brandenburgisches Staatsorchester, and the Orchestre de Chamber de Lausanne.
During her tenure with the HPO, which began in 2015, New was also appointed resident conductor of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and music director of its youth symphony.
This summer she worked as a “conducting fellow” at the Tanglewood Music Center in Massachusetts. She also performed as a Dudamel Conducting Fellow with the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
