Making cookies for a good cause

Lucia Martinez is a staff member at the YWCA’s “At the Table” café. She has worked there since the café opened in May last year.

She knew she wanted to contribute something to the programs at the YWCA, so she started making cookies — with the proceeds going to the Transitional Living program for women. She was then asked to create cookies for other Y events, like Walk a Mile in Her Shoes. Since then, she has been volunteering her time to make cookies for worthy causes. (The chef at the café donates the ingredients.)

“Somebody asked me to do a cookie related to breast cancer awareness. And I thought of the ribbon, but I had seen cookies like that before. Then, I thought of boobie cookies, so I thought I will try to make different little designs for them every week so that people can collect them (four different designs for the four weeks of October).”

She is thinking of doing lightning rods, as well as stars, and little flowers. “I don’t do any nudity — no flesh tones.”

Inspired by others’ boobie cookie creations, Martinez set to work on her own special designs. A recent offering has a Wonder Woman theme — a red bikini top with gold stars. She likes its powerful design and notes that red is the YWCA brand colour for Walk a Mile in Her Shoes.

It is especially appropriate that they start out as heart-shaped sugar cookies turned upside down and transformed, with coloured icing, into a fun bikinitop-clad set of boobies.

The cookies sell for $3 each and help to raise funds for the Y’s Encore program for women recovering from breast cancer surgery. It includes gentle post surgical exercise such as swimming, as well as other recovery information provided through guest speakers and support groups.

Martinez hopes to make $500 for the program.
