IceDog Dhillon at it again

- TERI PECOSKIE

It looks like the Hamilton Bulldogs aren’t the only ones who have a tough time scoring on Stephen Dhillon.

The Niagara IceDogs netminder has been named the OHL player of the week and the CHL goaltender of the week after posting a perfect 3-0 record, including a shutout, over the weekend.

Dhillon turned aside 97 shots for a 0.97 goals-against average and a .970 save percentage against Peterborough, Saginaw and Flint.

He also helped the IceDogs climb to first place in the Central Division standings with the back-to-back-to-back wins.

Last season, the 20-year-old from Buffalo had Hamilton’s number — at least until the playoffs.

He was undefeated in five starts against the Bulldogs, with a goals-against average of 2.15 and a save percentage of 0.941.

Hamilton, which went on to eliminate Niagara in five games in the conference semifinal last spring, faces the IceDogs six times this campaign, starting Nov. 15 in St. Catharines.

The Bulldogs will be without their head coach for the next couple of weeks.

Dave Matsos is in New Brunswick for the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. The Burlington native is an assistant coach for Canada Red — one of the country’s three entries — and won’t return to Hamilton until Nov. 9 at the earliest.

Bulldogs general manager Steve Staios said associate coach Vince Laise will take over head coaching duties in his absence, while Ron Wilson and Patrick Jarrett will be behind the bench as assistants. The team will also be without rookie defenceman Michael Renwick, who is suiting up for Canada White.

Joining Matsos on the Team Canada coaching staff is Hamilton native and Saginaw Spirit bench boss Troy Smith, who is serving as an assistant coach for Canada Black. The eight-team tournament gets underway on Saturday.

Fans at FirstOntario Centre won’t have to keep score for themselves this weekend.

Tim Murphy, a spokesperson for venue management company, Spectra, said in an email the scoreboard facing the west side of the arena, which went dark before the Bulldogs hosted Oshawa on Friday, has been repaired. He also said the fix was minor.
