What’s happening on the Linc?
A crane and construction vehicles have been at the Upper Gage on-ramp to the eastbound Lincoln Alexander Parkway since September of last year and to passing motorists it may look like there’s not much going on. That’s because the work is all underground.
Contractors are in the midst of a $10.5-million repair to a 450metre length of storm sewer that serves much of the Mountain south of Mohawk Road and empties into Red Hill Creek near Dartnall Road.
Built in the 1960s, the arched trunk line stands 5.5 metres high and 5.2 metres wide, and repairs became a priority after city monitoring found cracks putting it at risk of collapsing.
Work is essentially installing a new sewer within the existing sewer using prefab concrete panels and reinforcing materials to help it last for the next 100 years.
City spokesperson Jasmine
Graham says crews are currently installing rebar and work is expected to be completed by August.
The project has proceeded on
schedule and only encountered minor delays during rainy periods when there’s too much water in the pipe, she says.
Ottawa is picking up half the
repair tab through its Clean Water and Wastewater Fund.
The the province and city are splitting the rest of the cost of the project.
