1921-2018

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of a loving wife, mother, grandmother, cousin and aunt who passed away on November 16, 2018 at the age of 97. Joyce was married to Russell Smith (1922 - 2011) for 61 years during which time they shared many joys. She was the only child of Jack and Isabella Hamer. She is survived by her only daughter, Leanne Walter (Bruce), and was exceptionally proud of her grandson, Christopher. She is also survived by her cousin Valerie Baker (Barry) and her brotherin-law, William Smith (Betsy) and aunt to their daughters, Sharon (Jim), Kathy (John) and Nancy. Born in Bolton, England, Joyce moved to Hamilton with her parents in 1928. Joyce was a volunteer with the Red Cross during the Second World War, and worked 24 years at Stelco leaving in 1964. Joyce was an active member of the Bach Elgar Choir for many years. Both she and Russ enjoyed performing with The Savoyards’. Joyce attended St. James Anglican Church before joining St. Thomas Anglican Church in 1943, where she was a choir member and finally joining the Church of the Nativity in her later years. She made many lasting friendships in all locations and was godmother to eight children. She will be fondly remembered and missed by many. Profound thanks to the staff at the Hamilton General Hospital Cardiac unit and to the LHIN team members and her many personal support workers for their caring efforts over the past few years. Visitation will take place at MARLATT FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION CENTRE, 615 Main Street East (east of Sanford), on Wednesday, November 21st from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held at the Church of the Nativity, 1831 King Street East, Thursday at 11 a.m. A reception will follow at the Church. Interment at White Chapel Memorial Gardens will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to Interval House, Hamilton, the Hamilton /Burlington SPCA, or to the Church of the Nativity would be appreciated by the family.
