How Deforestation Causes Global Issues

- BY TIANNA THORKILDSEN, GRADE 9

We have lots of global and world issues. One of them is deforestation. Deforestation is when wide areas of trees are cleared mostly by humans to make paper, paint, cereal boxes, maple syrup and lots more. Each year, 3.5 to 7 billion trees are cut down. Deforestation causes other global issues too like desertification, extinction and global warming.

First of all, deforestation causes desertification. Desertification is when land becomes a desert. Without trees blocking the sun from the ground, the soil dries out quickly and many lands that used to be forests can quickly turn into deserts.

Secondly, deforestation causes extinction. Extinction is when there are no more animals or plants of a particular species alive on the earth. Some animals that are extinct are dodo birds, Tasmanian tigers, baiji white dolphins, woolly mammoths and passenger pigeons. Eighty per cent of animals live in forests. When trees get cut down, it’s hard for animals to find new homes and food. Most animals don’t survive. Scientists estimate that 150-200 species of plants, insects and mammals go extinct every day.

Lastly, deforestation causes global warming. Global warming is a process that makes the temperature rise. When we cut down trees, it releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. When carbon dioxide is in the atmosphere it raises the average temperature because heat is being trapped. Which causes global warming.

To conclude, deforestation causes many global issues. Deforestation causes global issues like desertification, extinction and global warming.

As global citizens, we should all come together and help the earth.
