The Hamilton Spectator

Probably (my least favourite word) (ever)

- BY NOOR JAMIL

Probability: a mathematical concept taught to you in the second grade.

Sensibility: comes into play once you understand risk.

Responsibility: a trait (I would hope) you integrate into your decisionmaking process.

Chance, at a glance, is risky.

To determine how large the risk is, you look at the probability.

You could win,

Or you could lose.

It all depends on what you choose.

Flip a coin, call heads.

Probability says you’ll be right, with a chance of 50%.

But what if you called tails?

You had the same chance, but it failed.

It failed you.

Chance and risk are often compared.

At the very least, both you dare.

You must deal with the consequences,

Which at times, make things more comprehensive,

And put you in your senses.

The world isn’t in black and white.

There’s a lot of grey,

And sometimes,

(a lot of the time),

It’s hard to see past it.

I would love to say:

Do whatever you want, it’ll be okay.

But much to my dismay,

I can’t.

The statement is simply false.

You can use numbers to help,

But it’s really up to chance.

The outcome is either or,

No matter the circumstance.

Do your best

And stay positive.

In the end,

Whatever happens, happens.

Going forward,

Be optimistic,

For the world had so much to offer,

You’ve barely scratched the surface.
