Winterfest fun

Hamilton’s Winterfest continues with many events running daily through Feb. 18. Here are six fun festival events. For more events and details, go to hamiltonwi­nterfest.ca The Canteen at Memorial Park in Waterdown is Saturday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Live music features Corin Raymond at 8 p.m. There will also be an air hockey tournament, free skating on the outdoor loop, a firepit, a marketplac­e, refreshmen­ts and a kids’ obstacle course. There’s free skating for all ages on Saturday at Stoney Creek Arena, 37 King St. W., from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; outdoor skating with rentals is available daily throughout the festival at Pier 8 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., 47 Discovery Dr. Centremoun­t Winterfest fun features the Bruce Cup three-on-three hockey tournament, games and barbecue on Saturday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. It all happens in Bruce Park, 145 Brucedale Ave.

The North Central Community Associatio­n Pancake Breakfast is Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in the gym at Eva Rothwell Centre, 460 Wentworth St. N. Crafts, entertainm­ent and pancakes.

Japanese Film Festival: Nihon Eigasai is Sunday, at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., at Hamilton Public Library Central Branch. Two screenings of movies from Japan.

Children’s museum

The Chinese New Year Festival is Saturday at the Hamilton Children’s Museum, 1072 Main St. E. The history of the Chinese New Year is shared through traditiona­l dances performed by Jessica Yue at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Seating is limited. The event is for ages five and up. Regular admission rates apply.

Valens Conservati­on Area is open daily for ice fishing. Only catchand-release fishing is permitted, and bait and rental huts are not available. Register now for the Valens annual ice fishing derby Family Day weekend, Feb. 16, from sunrise to 1 p.m. This is a catch-and-release bluegill, crappie and perch derby. Tickets are available in advance or day-of for $25 per adult and $15 per child (12 and under).

Also at Valens, Fifty Point offers skating on the pond. Valens Lake will have cleared sections on the lake offering areas to skate as well as a separate hockey area. Do not walk out onto frozen lakes or ponds unless it is posted safe to do so.

Binbrook Little Theatre

“Beauty and the Beast” features an all-ages cast for this pantomime that mixes song, dance and jokes for the whole family. Runs to Feb. 17. Performanc­es this weekend include Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. Memorial Hall, 2600 Hwy. 56, Binbrook.
