Three face attempted murder charges after stabbing
Man attacked in apartment on Main Street East, remains in critical condition after surgery
One person has been arrested on charges of attempted murder and another remains on the loose after a vicious stabbing late Wednesday night in central Hamilton.
Police say the assault occurred at about 11 p.m., when a 30-yearold man entered the apartment of an acquaintance at 646 Main St. E., just east of Burris Street.
The man was invited inside before he was “viciously attacked” by three assailants, said Const. Krista-Lee Ernst.
Two of the assailants stole the man’s keys and fled in his white Acura sedan. A third assailant jumped out of a window upon police arrival.
Police say one man entered the apartment as the beating took place and tried to break it up to no avail. The man was arrested as a possible suspect, police say, but later released unconditionally.
The victim was sent to hospital where he underwent lifesaving surgery. He remains in critical condition.
Madeleine Divers, 33, of Hamilton is charged with attempted murder and robbery. She appeared in court Tuesday.
Police say Divers was arrested after she returned to the scene from which she fled. It is unclear whether she escaped in the stolen Acura or jumped out the apartment window.
Divers — also known as Madeleine Peternel — is the estranged wife of Anthony Divers, who was fatally shot by a Hamilton police constable on Sept. 30, 2016. A weeks-long coroner’s inquest ruled the death as a homicide in November 2019.
Jason Long, 27, of Hamilton, is at large and wanted for attempted murder and robbery in Wednesday’s stabbing.
He is known to police and considered dangerous.
Long is described as white, five-foot-six and 150 pounds, with sleeve tattoos on both arms, several tattoos on his neck and a teardrop tattoo under his right eye. The sides of his head are shaved with longer hair on the top styled as a mohawk.
Police would not confirm the status of the third assailant.
The weapons used in the attack have yet to be recovered and the victim’s stolen white Acura, which had its bumper torn off during the suspects’ escape, remains missing, police say.
Police closed three lanes of Main Street East at Burris Street as forensic detectives searched the apartment. The scene is expected to be held into Friday.
