Two new virus deaths, three new outbreaks reported
Hamilton public health is reporting two new COVID-19 deaths, 42 new cases and three new outbreaks.
The two people who died were in their 80s or older. A total of 281 people have died with COVID since the pandemic began.
The new public health statistics released Wednesday show new outbreaks at August 8 dim sum and sushi restaurant on Wilson Street, with two cases in staff; Amica assisted living in Stoney Creek, with one case in a staff member; and Barbara Caffe Ristorante in Stoney Creek, with four cases in staff.
There are 21 active outbreaks in the city including four at schools or before- and afterschool programs, four at seniors’ homes, and seven at shelters or settings that support vulnerable Hamiltonians. An outbreak at the Hamilton-Wentworth Detention Centre has seen 28 people infected since the outbreak began Feb. 15.
No new cases were recorded there Wednesday.
Two outbreaks are now over. They include Wentworth Lodge in Dundas, which had one case in a staff member, and Domino’s Pizza at 1171 Upper James St., which had three staff cases.
A total of 47 people are in Hamilton hospitals with COVID.
Since the pandemic began a little under a year ago, the city has recorded 10,247 cases of COVID. Of those, 92 per cent are considered resolved. There are currently 376 active cases in the city, down from a high of 1,714 active cases on Jan. 5.
The weekly rate of new cases per 100,000 population is 55, up from 51 on Tuesday. Of all COVID-19 tests within the past week, 1.9 per cent had a positive result.
