Canadian icons bringing musical scrapbook to Hamilton audience

Amy Sky and Marc Jordan tour first duet album

- CATHERINE WHITNALL

Amy Sky and Marc Jordan are proving two heads — or at least two voices — are better than one.

The Canadian music icons have joined forces for not only their first duet album together, but have hit the road in support of it. The tour will include a stop at the Ancaster Memorial Arts Centre on May 7.

The multiple award-winning singer-songwriters fuse their individual talents to create a spellbinding evening of entertainment.

Throughout the evening, aside from their wry humour and anecdotes spanning 36 years of marriage, each will perform a generous sampling of their own hits in addition to their critically acclaimed Juno Award nominated “He Sang, She Sang.”

In a way, the album itself came together courtesy of their son Ezra, who they visit regularly in Nashville.

“And we sing in the car on the way down there … In the car, our voices just sound so great together, but you really can’t hold a concert in a car. I don’t think you’d sell many tickets,” quipped Jordan.

Sky noted the two have toured together over the years, the last time in 2016.

“But we never had a record to tour behind,” said Sky, who added the album was a great way to blend their unique voices. Sky’s is roots/ Americana while Jordan’s is jazz/ R&B.

The project came together “seamlessly” said Jordan. Despite having two uniquely different voices, “we sing harmonies beautifully together.”

The two opted to take their time pulling it all together, though, culling through a wide assortment of music by artists they had worked with and/or admired.

“It was all about finding a hybrid that would suit us best … We wanted to have the best songs that would complement our voices,” said Sky, noting the album that features hits by Bonnie Raitt, Smokey Robinson and Tom Petty is “kind of like a scrapbook through our musical tastes.”

For this series of concerts, they will be joined by a group of outstanding musical friends including their son, who will also perform his own work.

While the tour is focused on the new album, Sky noted hitting the stage isn’t just about performing the music.

“When we’re together, it’s very improvisational and we have a lot of fun … It’s a great opportunity to share some laughs, and a bit of our personality, and give audiences a genuine experience,” said Sky.

“And we’re really looking forward to sharing the stage with our son for the very first time.” Showtime is 7:30 p.m.
