London awaiting Monday bail hearing while in custody after latest charges
A suspended London police officer charged with harassment and breaching his release conditions for the second time is being held in custody until a bail hearing next week.
Const. Juan Romero, 47, was arrested Tuesday and charged with criminal harassment and failing to comply with a release order.
Romero appeared twice in court this week and was remanded into custody until a bail hearing set for Monday, when a Crown attorney will be brought in from out of town and a Spanish interpreter was requested for Romero’s proposed surety, according to court documents.
An out-of-town Crown is required for cases of police officers charged with criminal offences.
The 20-year police officer has been suspended with pay since he was arrested on Dec. 12, 2023, and charged with two counts of assault, assault with a weapon, resisting arrest and obstructing police.
Romero is alleged to have assaulted a man and woman, both with the same last name, on Dec. 12, the documents say. He was released on an undertaking that prohibited him from going within 25 metres of a northeast London home, the documents say.
Romero was released on an undertaking for a second time after he was arrested again on Dec. 23 and charged with failing to comply with the undertaking.
In the most recent case, Romero is alleged to have harassed a woman “by repeated communications” and breached his release conditions by going near the same northwest London home, the documents say.
