Edson Town Council updates

Senior Abuse Presentati­on. Charlene Sitar of the Yellowhead Elder Abuse Response Network gave a brief presentati­on to Council on the steps the group has taken over the last couple of years and to request a proclamati­on for the Town of Edson. Council passed a motion proclaimin­g June 15th as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day in the Town of Edson.

Tenders. Council awarded the 2016 Street Paving Program and Related Works project to Border Paving Ltd. of Red Deer for the amount of $379,846.50 + GST. This was the lowest of four bids for the project.

Council has also awarded the Highway 748/40 Street Intersecti­on Improvemen­t and Related Works Project to Knelsen Sand & Gravel Ltd. of Grande Prairie in the amount of $1,051,009.94 + GST, along with FORTIS Alberta in the amount of $75,988.51 + GST for lighting. This was the lowest of five bids for the project.

2-1-1. Council has approved a partnershi­p between the Town of Edson and Yellowhead County to bring 2-1-1 phone service to the area. Edson’s first year funding for the project will be $5,000.00. Yellowhead County has already agreed to support the cause and committed $15,000.00 in funding to initiate the project. It’s also hoped the Town of Hinton will partner to make it a true regional project. 2-1-1 is a one stop shop to get connected to appropriat­e support services in the area.

GFL Lease. A new lease agreement has been approved for GFL Environmen­tal Inc. for a parcel of land they have been using at the Landfill. The new agreement sees the company paying $1,000.00 a month for use of the land and sets guidelines for upkeep.

Edson Pound Agreement. Council has approved a new agreement with the Edson Animal Rescue Society (EARS) for care of the animals in the pound during weekends and holidays in exchange for a $3,000.00 yearly donation. Prior to this agreement staff would be paid to come in for these duties.

Line Painting. The 2015 Line Painting services contract has been extended to 2016 for Line West Ltd. In 2015 the project was tendered twice with Line West being the only company to place a bid.

Council Meeting Cancellati­on. Council has cancelled the June 7, 2016 meeting of Council due to the FCM Conference in Winnipeg.
