Hodge Podge Being me

- by June McInnes June McInnes

Not being on a diet has really worked for me.

I haven’t weighed myself for six months up until last Friday. We still have some stuff in boxes we haven’t unpacked yet and when we did find the bathroom scales the battery was dead (typical and probably our own fault for buying an all singing all dancing one instead of a normal one). That being said we did and had to replace the battery which I kept forgetting to buy every time we went grocery shopping. Finally, we bought one and it was with a little trepidation I put it into the machine last Friday.

I had been “being good” as the phrase goes, was feeling better in myself and my clothes were feeling more comfortable, but captain paranoia was on my shoulder telling me I had failed and was useless. Self doubt was creeping in, I couldn’t pluck up the courage to get on them right then and there. Captain paranoia 1 me 0. I left it for a few hours later when everyone was in another room and I was alone. I slipped off my shoes and squared up to the scales, captain paranoia was ringing in my ears .... I stepped onto the scales, waited whilst they calibrated my weight…

I looked down and read the number….wait there must be some mistake, I tried again and a third time….No the scales were adamant that was what it was….I took the scales to the kitchen, weighed some things I was sure about the weight of….they weighed true. I was shocked. According to this I’d actually lost weight without trying, now that’s a first!. I had lost 30lbs. To say I was stunned is an understatement all I did was change what I ate and didn’t do it to lose weight just to feel a little better.

I’m still fat having said that mind you. I carry weight all over so when I lose any you don’t notice my backside looking thinner it comes down to annoying things like my underwear not fitting properly and my shoes letting my feet shuttle around inside them, my trousers falling down, annoying stuff like that but I must admit that I do feel better in myself and well, string is cheap, so I could always tie up my trousers.

Finally, after years of diets, fad or not I have found the rhythm that is me, I have found what it is that works for me. I don’t go hungry and I don’t binge, healthy moderation is the key, nothing is off limits for me just not as often or too much.

So now I can function better as a person, walking is easier and I don’t get breathless all the time. My clothes fit a lot better and I generally feel happier about that.

Sometimes healthy lifestyle changes if done right can be a good thing.

If you’re thinking of making any lifestyle changes you should consult your doctor and maybe get some advice before you start. I did I got his blessing first and told him what I intended to do, right at the get go now I feel great. Good luck if you’re trying to feel better and hurray for you if you don’t need to lose weight I am in envy of you.

Either way, it is said we only pass this way once, so let’s make the best of it.
