Edson RCMP remove 13 drivers from roadway over Edson Ball Tournament weekend

Edson RCMP and Edson ITU (Integrated Traffic Unit) were busy over the long weekend stopping impaired drivers in their tracks on local roadways. Over the four days 13 drivers were taken off of the road for various alcohol or drug related driving offences.

11 individual­s have been charged criminally for impaired operation of a motor vehicle by alcohol. Furthermor­e, one individual was given a 24 hour suspension­s for alcohol use while another individual was issued an Immediate Roadside Suspension (IRS) after providing a “Caution” on an Approved Screening Device. A further 34 tickets were issued for offences under the Gaming and Liquor Act.

“This weekend we made a determined effort to target impaired drivers with high visibility initiative­s like Checkstops and proactive patrols,” states Staff Sergeant Peter King of the Edson RCMP Detachment. “The removal of 13 drivers from the road by our officers speaks to their diligent work and commitment to the safety of our highways in our local community.”

Drivers who have consumed alcohol in excess of the provincial limit of 50mg% and criminal limit of 80mg% face sanctions including licence suspension and motor vehicle seizure. Edson RCMP and ITU are committed to highway safety in Edson and Yellowhead County. If you suspect someone is driving while impaired please note the road, direction of travel, licence plate and vehicle descriptio­n and call 911 when safe to do so.
