HRH optometry field trip
Holy Redeemer is no stranger to organizing excellent field trips for their students such as going to the Citadel Theatre, Telus World of Science or the University of Alberta. However, it is always great when they can visit a local business right here in Edson to learn about the concepts they have studied in class.
On Friday, February 17, the grade 8 Science students took a walk down to Henry Family Vision Care where optometrist Dr. Krista Henry gave them a first-hand look at her local business, as well as closer look at the eye.
“We are currently learning about how the eye works,” says Science 8 Teacher Dana Jumaga. “Dr. Henry was able to show students a really first rate look at how the eye works and what it’s like to work as an optometrist.”
Throughout their tour of the office, students were given a hands-on and interactive experience by seeing how various equipment works. One station was on different types of lenses and how they change what we see, while another was on contact lenses and how they work to correct vision problems.
In addition to the various stations the students got to see, eight lucky students had photographs taken of their retinas and the class got to look at and compare these to each other. Dr. Henry then provided some retina images of unhealthy retinas and how they differed from healthy retinas.
And finally, students had a blast trying on all of the beautiful brand names frames that Henry Optical sells.
The field trip ended with some delicious Timbits provided by Dr. Henry who also provided students with a 15 per cent off the next time they need glasses.
Overall, the students found the trip was extremely informative and would like to thank Dr. Henry and her staff for taking time away from their busy schedules to meet with them.
