Fluoride in the Edson Water Supply
February 2017
Dear Residents / Landlords / Tenants
Re: Fluoride in the Edson Water Supply
The municipal drinking water provided to your home contains naturally occurring fluoride. Over the past year, the average fluoride levels have been within the guidelines recommended by Health Canada. At this time you do not need to consider any other water sources for anyone, including children under the age of 8 years old. Alternative water had been recommended in years previous to 2016.
The Town of Edson continues to upgrade and improve the water system to meet the community’s needs and manage the levels of naturally occurring fluoride in the water supply. Alberta Health Services (AHS) works closely with the Town and its licensing agency, Alberta Environment and Parks to ensure safe and high quality water is delivered to residents’ homes and businesses. Measurements taken between January and December 2016 show the naturally occurring fluoride levels are below the maximum acceptable concentration set by Health Canada: 1.5 mg/L (milligrams per litre) or ppm (parts per million). These levels depend on several factors including well source, water levels, and the location in the community. The naturally occurring levels of fluoride have, and will continue to fluctuate. AHS will continue to monitor the situation and regularly provide health information as required to ensure you can take appropriate measures for you and your family.
