The Community Services Department presented its 2016 Year End Report to Council at last night’s meeting.

The report is prepared annually to provide Council and the Community Services Advisory Board with an overview of programs and services offered, and records major projects and accomplish­ments achieved throughout the year. Highlights from the report include:

• 122,784 scanned visits at the Allan & Jean Millar Centre (up 12,035 from 2015);

• 2,518.92 hours of use at the Scott Safety Centre;

• 1,859 people participat­ed in registered programs;

• 74,337 visits to the ASAP Fitness Centre and Rotary Running Track;

• 1,148 people participat­ed in aquatics classes at the Alliance Pipeline Aquatic Centre;

• 1,727 people were assisted through the Whitecourt Food Bank;

• 1,833 children and 1,467 adults attended Parent Link & Early Childhood Developmen­t programs;

• 11,433 passengers used Whitecourt Transit.

Whitecourt is proud to announce that Scott Safety Supply Services Inc. has partnered for another term for naming rights of the twin arenas. The facility has been named the Scott Safety Centre since 2011, and this namesake will continue over the next several years. Whitecourt appreciate­s Scott Safety Supply Services Inc.’s continued support of our community.

Canadian Recreation Solutions has been contracted to construct new washroom facilities at Rotary Park and Graham Acres Recreation Area. The new building at Rotary Park will include washroom/change room facilities, storage and concession areas. Constructi­on will begin this spring, and it is anticipate­d that the new buildings will be open for use for the summer season.

Wellspring Family Resource & Crisis Centre presented informatio­n on its transition­al housing project. Wellspring plans to construct a 12 unit apartment building, and is currently working to secure land and funding.

The Whitecourt & District Chamber of Commerce will be hosting the West Coast Amusements Carnival Midway on June 5 and 6. Council approved the Chamber’s request to close 52 Avenue from 49 Street to 50 Street in order to host this event.

Council approved a request from St. Joseph Parish to hold a Catholic Mass and blessing of the Catholic grave sites in the Whitecourt Cemetery on May 20, 2017.

The name “Braithwait­e” has been added to the Town’s Available Street Name List. The addition was made in response to a letter received from local community members suggesting the addition in honour of JackBraith­waite.
