The benefits of prenatal classes

- Tina Sawchuk, RN BScN, IBCLC Public Health Alberta Health Services

Having a baby is a very exciting time, but expectant mothers may also experience some anxiety or fear. Prenatal classes are one of the best ways to prepare for your baby’s birth and can help pregnant women feel more empowered. Knowing what to expect can also decrease fear and lead to a more positive birth experience. Current, evidencebased information can also help expectant women make informed choices about care.

Expectant women are encouraged to bring a partner or support person to the classes, who can learn a lot of helpful information. Prenatal classes also give the opportunity for questions & answers related to labor, birth and the newborn.

Labour & Birth Topics

-Comfort measures for labour.

-Relaxation and breathing techniques.

-Role of support person.
