Airdrie RCMP- Requesting the public’s assistance in reducing crimes of opportunity- #9pmroutine

-

On November 7, 2017 The Airdrie RCMP sent a media release asking residents not to leave their vehicles running with the keys in the ignition to warm up. RCMP would also like to remind the public not to leave vehicles or homes unlocked at any time or leave any valuables within easy access.

On November 14 Airdrie RCMP conducted patrols of Coopers and Bayside Neighbourhoods and observed 89 vehicles left running to warm up. Inherently some of these were remote started, but many were not. Vehicles locked from the outside with keys in the ignition are an easy target for thieves to break the window or punch the lock and steal the vehicle. Use a remote starter, never leave the vehicle unattended, or wait inside your vehicle for it to warm up to prevent targets for thieves.

RCMP also continue to experience numerous reports of vehicles being rummaged through or items taken due to unlocked doors. Vehicles are regularly being stolen due to spare keys being left in the vehicle, or another vehicle that is nearby. Thefts of bikes, and thefts from garages are also common occurrences.

RCMP remind the public to complete their #9pmroutine. Every night at 9 p.m., check your vehicles to ensure they are locked, move bikes, toys and tools inside and ensure that your garage is closed and locked. Make this your daily routine at 9pm and you can help reduce crime in our community.

Never leave spare keys, garage door openers or valuables inside the vehicle. Ensure house and garage doors are locked and all items are removed from the yard.

RCMP conduct regular patrols of neighbourhoods at night, and routinely see garages left open, bikes on the yards, and vehicles with garage door openers inside.

Airdrie continues to be an easy target for thieves and RCMP need the public’s assistance in order to prevent crimes of opportunity.

Commit to a #9pmroutine.
