Green fingers?

- by June McInnes

Today I’m planting some seeds, I don’t have tons of room to plant great swaths of plants it’s true, but I do have a small deck. Even a balcony would work, a few small pots is all I’m aiming for as I know I can’t get out and dig over the garden like I used to, so I’m keeping it small this year and hopefully pretty. I did mention before I’m going to grow tomatoes with one of our grandsons, that will start if I manage to get a decent plant from one of the seeds I plant today.

Here’s a picture of the supplies needed. Small bag of potting compost Some bio degradable pots Assorted seeds of choice

Some water

Two tin foil trays or plastic Plastic gloves Newspaper to spread out on the table to minimize mess.

Fill the little biodegradable pots with the soil and arrange them in the tray.

Sort out which seeds your going to put in each pot, don’t forget to label them, that’s important as you will forget if you plant multiple kinds, I know I do, so I label everything now, it’s much easier in the long run. Just for fun this time, I’ve used glow in the dark stars, but you could use wooden lolly sticks or pieces of plastic bottles cut into strips.

Start putting the seeds of your choice into the top of the pots and cover with a very shallow amount of soil. Water them and let them stand in the windowsill by day and bring them in at night. You could even pop them into a large clear plastic bag to create a greenhouse effect to warm the soil up and keep them warmer at night. Germination is what we want, and warmth and sunlight will do that.

I’m looking forward to what ever decides to come up. It will be very exciting for me as I love to grow things. I was even thinking of having some hanging baskets this year, it depends on what does grow, so now all I have to do is keep the cat off them, remember to get them off the windowsill at night and to water them, oh that and keep my green fingers crossed.

Happy gardening.
