Increased competition for wireless communications
Jim Eglinski, Member of Parliament for Yellowhead, is pleased to inform residents of increased competition and access for cell services in Canada.
On March 28, the Department of Innovation, Science and Economic Development published a framework for the auction of 600 MHz spectrum that will improve the cell phone service landscape for Canadians by supporting competition in the marketplace and taking action on three elements of telecom service: quality, coverage and price.
The auction will set aside 43 per cent of the spectrum for regional competitors and potential new market entrants. More competition will lead to better quality services and lower prices for Canadians.
“When I was on the Industry Committee, we heard that large telecommunication corporations are hogging the spectrum and pushing out regional and new competitors,” said MP Jim Eglinski. “By setting aside the spectrum specifically for smaller companies, we can create more competition in the rural regions that large companies ignore.”
The airwaves in the 600 MHz frequency carry signals over long distances (good for rural wireless coverage) and penetrate buildings (good for urban wireless quality), which makes it possible for everyone to benefit from the new competition.
“We’ve all experienced a dropped call when travelling throughout the riding, especially in the northwest end of Yellowhead and Jasper National Park. I encourage all local telecommunication companies to participate in the auction next year to help improve the service in our region,”concluded MP Eglinski.
