Making long-term care decisions easier

-

Kim Schreiner, MLA for Red Deer-North, has introduced legislation that would make it easier for Alberta families to make decisions about long-term care.

If passed, Private Members Bill 203: Long Term Care Transparency Act will create a publicly accessible online registry to provide Albertans with information about auxiliary hospitals and nursing homes in the province. This would include type of operator, facility capacity, services provided, additional charges if applicable, and results of any inspections or investigations conducted the Nursing Homes Act or the Hospitals Act.

“I know that decisions about long-term care are some of the most challenging decisions that families ever have to make. By empowering Albertans with the information they need to make the best choice for themselves and their loves ones, we can make their lives better during a very difficult time.”

MLA Schreiner has consulted with Albertan families, long-term care residents, and stakeholder groups, who are widely supportive of the proposed changes.

“Creating an information portal like what this bill proposes would make it easier for Alberta families to navigate the complex options within this province’s continuing care system. We applaud MLA Schreiner’s efforts, and hope to see this legislation passed.”
