HRH takes a bite out of the Big Apple
It was a week to remember for fourteen high school students from Holy Redeemer Travel Club as they travelled to New York City.
“It was an amazingly busy week,” says HRH Travel Club Organizer Peter Taylor. “The students fundraised for two years in preparation for this trip, and it did not disappoint.”
The trip was the third spring break trip HRH students have taken to NYC since. It saw the students take in all the major sites in NYC. These included the Statue of Liberty, the 9/11 Museum, One World Trade, the United Nations, and the Museum of Modern Art.
“We walked throughout the city every day,” says Taylor. “We walked about 22,000 steps each day. Needless to say, the students were exhausted once nighttime came.
Each day had a packed itinerary from walking the Brooklyn Bridge, to seeing all the amazing artwork and artifacts in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, to enjoying the very busy Times Square.
The trip also saw the students participate in a number of activities. One such activity was a Broadway Stage Combat workshop led by a professional Broadway actor. Afterwards they even got to meet Tony nominated actor Mike Faist, who is currently starring in the Tony Award winner for Best Musical Dear Evan Hansen.
Each day had a packed itinerary from walking the Brooklyn Bridge, to seeing all the amazing artwork and artifacts in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, to enjoying the very busy Times Square.
Another interactive event was meeting Billy Mitchell (Mr. Apollo himself) at the Apollo Theater in Harlem. During the tour, the students got to perform on stage at the Apollo. Kaitlyn Krebs sang the opening number from The Lion King along with the other stars of the HRH production that took place this past December. Mitchell offered many words of encouragement to the students.
Throughout the trip, the students also saw four Broadway shows. “This trip had a lot of drama kids, but even the students who are not in drama loved all the shows we saw,” says Taylor. The shows were Chicago, Kinky Boots (starring Wayne Brady!), Dear Evan Hansen (featuring Mike Faist whom they met the day before), and School of Rock. Each one brought the students to their feet with a standing ovation.
Other noteworthy attractions were going to the top of Rockefeller Center (Top of the Rock) where they got a great view of the city, touring Radio City Music Hall, and touring NBC Studios where they saw news anchor Megyn Kelly.
All of the students brought home some special memories of the week. Whether it was going inside the Trump Tower on 5th Avenue, walking through Central Park, shopping at the legendary Macy’s on 34th Street, or eating at the Katz’s Deli made famous by the movie When Harry Met Sally.
It was certainly a busy week, but one the students won’t soon forget. And when asked if Taylor would be leading another trip to NYC in the future, he smiled and said, “There is still a lot of apple to get a bite out of.”
