Edson curbside recycling public consultation results

The results of the curbside recycling survey have been reviewed by Council.

In March, the Town of Edson sent out a survey to all homeowners through the utility bills, as well as on social media and our website. The survey had asked the question “Would you be willing to pay an additional $2‐4 per month on your utility bill for biweekly curbside recycling services?”

In total, 882 responses were gathered and results showed support for a curbside recycling program. The final numbers showed 60.09 per cent (530) in support, 36.51 per cent (322) against, and 3.40 per cent (30) indifferent. (Charts attached)

Council was presented with this information and, while there was significant support for a curbside program, they felt the timing wasn’t right to move forward. With the current recycling market turmoil, and with the Town currently rolling out a waste and organic program, Council thought it would be prudent to hold off at least a few months to gather more information. Administration has been directed to continue developing a curbside recycling system that would be able to meet emerging challenges in a fiscally and environmentally responsible manner. It was also directed that administration work closely with the contractor and the Edson and District Recycling Society in developing the program.
