Strathmore RCMP warn of a Jewelry Scam

Strathmore RCMP are warning the public of a recent jewelry scam which involves people selling fake gold jewelry in the parking lots of local businesses.

Since May 13, 2018, Strathmore RCMP have received four separate reports from people who were approached in business parking lots by individuals selling jewelry. The sellers presented and sold the jewelry as authentic gold, and anyone who made the purchase later learned that the gold jewelry fake. In most of these occurrences, the vehicle involved is reported be a blue Dodge Journey, with a licence plate from Ontario or Quebec.

Reports vary with both men and women attempting to make the fraudulent sales, and they are described as middle- eastern, between the ages of 30 and 50. Strathmore RCMP say that in some of these cases, the scammers prey on victim’s emotions, often stressing urgency and their need to make enough money to return home. Further investigation has revealed that similar reports this month have come from victims in Vulcan, Halkirk, Sundre, and some have been reported in Saskatchewan as well.

“When scams are combined with an emotional appeal for help, unfortunately it is easier for people to be drawn in and become a victim” says Constable Denzil Morey, Strathmore RCMP Media Resource Officer.
