Jasper RCMP investigat­e multiple fatality collision

The RCMP have cleared from a collision scene, but investigat­ion remains ongoing into the crash which tragically left six people deceased, and two people in serious to life-threatenin­g condition.

On Aug. 7 at 6:30 p.m., RCMP were dispatched to a serious collision on Highway 93 at Honeymoon Lake. A van was travelling northbound, and collided with a vehicle travelling southbound. Preliminar­y investigat­ion suggests the two collided head-on. Following the collision, both vehicles caught fire. A third vehicle, in an effort to avoid this collision, went off the road.

The van had five occupants, all members of a family who were visiting from the states. two of those occupants were declared deceased on scene. while two were transporte­d to Edmonton hospitals in very serious condition. The fifth occupant, a young toddler, was transporte­d to the Jasper Hospital and was assessed as having no injury.

The southbound vehicle had four occupants, all of whom were determined to be deceased. Further informatio­n about these occupants is not available at this time.

The third vehicle that went off the road had two occupants who suffered only minor injuries.

Shortly after this initial collision, a second collision occurred two kilometres south of the collision scene, where one vehicle drove into the rear of another. This collision was not a part of the initial collision and will not be reported on further.

“Members of the public were enormously helpful in saving lives and helping everyone they could” says Sergeant Rick Bidaisee of the Jasper RCMP Detachment. “We want to thank everyone who selflessly pitched in and helped us.”
