Hodge Podge Cooler days

- by June McInnes June McInnes

Today is deliciously cooler, I so enjoy the cooler days we have, those are the days I can do some serious baking and get some work done, when it’s hot I’m no go for anything and have a lot of headaches. So, this type of day is bang on for me personally.

I’ve already been out and deadheaded all my flowers in the pots outside and was very excited to see my tomato plant is still making tomatoes, I’m yet to pick the first one I’m hoping it will get a little bigger before either the weather gets too chilly for it or I’m forced to pick it, because the plant gets a chill, whichever I don’t mind. Just happy it grew anything at all, especially as it was from a second planting, ( mice ate my seedlings, so it set me back a fair bit, I was a bit cross, but what’s done is done, right? So, I had to re plant) such is life and so here we are, excited and waiting for issue from my plants.

My sweet peas finally flowered also a second planting as did my pansies and nasturtiums, beans and mint, so I’m a happy camper and it might be in pots, but it makes me happy to go out and see them every day. And I have lettuce in pots as well, it’s so easy to go out and cut a few leaves off and leave the rest of the plant to carry on growing it means you get lettuce all summer instead of killing it off and having to go out and buy another lettuce. The added bonus for us is it tastes so much nicer being fresh too.

My only gripe this week is about dogs, dogs running the streets leaving their calling cards so to speak, not so long ago I was a passenger in a car that had to break sharply to avoid hitting a dog, it shakes you up for sure, the dog was fine it never even noticed we ate dashboard for it, it just ran off barking, please everyone , make sure your pets are safe and secure when you go out, if they’re not running the streets they can’t get hurt or hurt anyone or leave their calling card in other people’s yards or on the sidewalks.

Other than that, everything’s bobbing along, I’m still doing my penny numbers canning and hope to be making some chutneys or relishes soon, we shall see. My Christmas gift list is slowly being worked through and I hope to be ready long before the event is upon us, the last thing I’d like to do is make some nice cookies, the kind you decorate and give as a small gift. I have my little decorated boxes ready to fill and I’m really looking forward to that.

As I said in the beginning it’s cooler today, so I feel like it’s a chilli day here for us for supper, I might even make some home- made bread to go with it, the boys will enjoy that.

Sounds like a plan, so I’m off to find my slow cooker and start that off right now....

As always be nice to one another.....

Back to the k i tchen, I think I will attempt some home- made bread today, if not then some rolls, it will go well with super tonight, beggar’s hot pot.

As always be nice to one another, I’m off to make that bread....
