Hodge Podge Ringing the changes

- by June McInnes June McInnes

With the kids back at school it’s all change, change of routines, change of activities, even change of meal plans, all different, all singing all dancing.

Some kids are looking forward to going back some not, ours fall into that category. I myself am not one of the mums that are happy about it. I’ve loved the later times of getting up of having time to spend with the boys and hang out with them for a while, to have a laugh over a cup of coffee or just plain watch a film together. Even grocery shopping together was fun in an exhausting sort of way, but that’s because of the laughing involved when I’m with them, (I love our kids so much).

Even the weather has changed, cooler and with rain, great for cutting the smoke we’ve been plagued with over the last few weeks, shame the same amount of water or more couldn’t fall over B.C. and surrounding wildfire areas, shout out to the firefighters who are doing such a great job, risking life and limb trying to help total strangers and save property, lives and livestock.

Now it is cooler I can get on with more of my jobs to do, when the weather’s too hot I can’t function at any level, I just feel like I want to throw up all the time and sit in front of the air conditioning unit all day and that’s no good, there’s work to be done.

I’m looking forward to making my homemade bread again, it’s just been too hot to have the oven going and the boys have missed the bread I know. So that will be on the cards now, plus I’d like to get some pies ready for Christmas, not cooked, just ready to pop into the oven , you know the kind of thing I mean, you make them, then freeze them, ready to get out and brush with beaten egg and bake off, that way you can spend more time with any guests you might have visit and they still home baked goodness at the drop of a hat so to speak.

Of course, we have to have Halloween first and am I ready this year, last year was a bit of a bust what with moving and all so I couldn’t decorate like I wanted to, this year will be different, and I am looking forward to it greatly and one of the things about Halloween is the celebration. Making foods that the family like and decorating the house, haven’t decided what to be this year yet, it can’t be too scary as well have young grand children popping by and I don’t want to scare the biscuits out of them, so it’s a work in progress.

Won’t stop me making and decorating cookies though, but closer to the day it’s a bit of a way off right now, you could say I like to look or think ahead.

The garden is beginning to change, the leaves on one or two plants are starting to yellow I know as the light starts to get shorter from day to day the trees will soon follow, fall is very short in Canada, but I’m still hoping for a brown Halloween, we shall see.

I managed to pick some green runner beans this week and I have some tomatoes to come too, let’s hope we don’t get a snap frost or I’ll lose them all, I’ve been watching the weather reports to keep tabs on it because it would be such a shame to lose them all now. My mint finally grew and my assorted lettuces, chives and sweet peas, the nasturtiums brought lots of bees to my tomato flowers for which I am very grateful, thank you bees. Next year I intend to plant more and sooner, I had to replant because the mice ate my first crop of greens, little tinkers they are, hence the lateness of my plants, but I got there eventually. Next year I am going to use a propagator, so it has a lid and the little blighters won’t be able to get in at the plants.

So, today looks like a home-made bread day to me, the boys will love that, we could have some as hot buttered toast with a nice cup of tea this afternoon, nothing like having something that’s made with love and sharing it with loved ones.

As always, be nice to one another.
