Holy Redeemer welcomes back their newest teacher

It’s always nice when Holy Redeemer alumnus come back and visit the staff. It’s even nicer when they come back to join the staff as a teacher.
That’s what happened with Samantha Volk, a 2013 graduate of Holy Redeemer, who has returned home to take the newest teaching position at HRH.
“I’m very excited to be here,” says Ms. Volk. “I know so many of the staff that are here and it’s great to be a part of this amazing team. I’ve wanted to become a teacher for a long time, so it only makes sense to join this amazing school.”
Volk went to post-secondary school at the University of Alberta and graduated this past April with a major in Human Services and a minor in Math. She also completed her practicum here in Edson, so it only made sense for her to stay in her home community to take her first teaching position.
“We are very excited to have Ms. Volk back at HRH,” says Principal Bill McGowan. “We remember how dedicated she was as a student. She was a leader within our school community and well respected by our staff and her fellow classmates. We can’t wait for her bring all those amazing qualities to our teaching staff.”
Volk’s teaching assignment will see her instructing all of the senior and junior high Foods classes, English Language Arts 7, grade 7 to 10 Knowledge and Employability, and grade 7 to 10 Lifeskills.
In addition to her teaching duties, Volk will also be seen taking on some extra-curricular activities. “I’ll be coaching the Junior B Girls volleyball team and I’ll be the school ATA (Alberta Teacher Association) representative,” she says. “This is great considering I was the ATA President of our student local at the U of A.”
When asked why she wanted to become a teacher, Volk says she had a great time when she was in school. “It was a great school when I went here,” she says. “I also love sharing my passions with others and I want to help students prepare for the real world.”
In the weeks leading up to the first day of school Volk has seen the school become an extremely busy place. “So many things are happening here to make the best learning experience of our students.”
During the grade 7 orientation, she was able to see the many new students entering junior high and their excitement was very contagious. “Seeing them get excited, I became even more excited to get started with this school year,” she says. “I’ve been waiting five years to follow my dream of becoming a teacher and now it’s coming true.”
