The McLeod River Post

The U.S. mid terms are over bar the shouting of which I suspect there will be much more. As was widely predicted the Democrats took Congress while the Republicans consolidated their grip on the Senate. It was refreshing to see young people and visible minorities out in force to vote and take office, I hope this is a trend.

I am not at all surprised by the reaction of U.S. President Donald Trump. Declaring the night as a victory, blaming some Republicans lost because they didn’t support him then grabbing the headlines by making Attorney General, Jeff Sessions resign (firing him) then kicking off another very public spat with the media. I’ve said it before, Trump’s unpredictability is predictable, when something doesn’t go his way, he makes an enormous distraction to get the focus “back to him.” I really don’t want the toxic, hateful brand of politics from our neighbours to spread more here.

I fear that the rest of Trump’s term will continue in the same vein, divisive and hateful. The Russians must be cock a hoop. There is a real chance now that Mueller’s investigation will be derailed, distracted or worse with Trump’s temporary replacement of Sessions, Matthew Whitaker, whom I believe is Trump’s man. If Mueller has something I think now or very soon is the time to go with it or the window of opportunity may be slammed shut.

Practically any other, every other even, politician would see the loss of Congress as a major defeat. Perhaps Trump himself when he is alone, and reflecting may think so too. Political parties are ruthless and will quickly turn on anyone that is considered toxic to their chances of winning or maintaining power. Trump must have made enemies in his own party. I would not be surprised to see his own party instrumental in stripping him from office.

I’ve read that the EU and UK are close to a Brexit agreement, apart from the thorny issue of the Northern Ireland, Irish border that is. However, nearly there is better than nowhere near. I hope it works out.

Canada has long stood up for human rights and so it should. However, I am more than a little disconcerted that Canada is pushing hard for closer trading ties with China. With the U.S. running a trade war, logical, yes, good for business, maybe. But, is no one following the reports that China is locking up without trial hundreds of thousands, maybe a million people in camps? Do we ignore an inconvenient truth just like the 1930s? Principles should stand for something.

Do you recall that cigar shaped object that passed us by from the depths of space a while back? Now, some Harvard astronomers are saying it may have been an alien probe. And why not. We send probes. It’s not inconceivable that others may too. Friend, foe or indifferent? We may have cause to regret being noticed. Or, it could be the best thing to unite us.
