- By: Nada Adam

Thank you to all who read and follow our articles and a special thank you to the sister who called me last week asking about Joint Pain. It’s such a great question that we decided to make this topic the pri primary topic of this week’s article. I am so very grateful to have this opportunity to personally ask Dr. Khaled Hijazi detailed health questions and he’s so very generously took time out from his busy schedule to answer your questions. Dr. Hijazi graciously gave a thorough detailed answer on joint pain since this illness has many sufferers worldwide who would love to have relief Due to space, Dr. Hijazi’s article will be published in 2 parts - next article will contain the Fundamental treatments according to Humoral Medicine for Joint Pain. I learned a lot from his answer and I’m sure you’ll find Dr. Hijazi’s answer on the question on Joint Pain quite thorough!

Question: What causes joint pain and do you treat this illness?

Dr. Hijazi said, “The illness of Joint Pain according to Humoral Medicine stems from the residue of the Second Digestion Phase, i.e. what occurs in the liver and also, the residue of Third Digestion Phase that occurs in the blood vessels. Whereas, the residue of the Final Digestion Phase i.e. what occurs when the humors infiltrate the orifices from the arteries of the organs to be transmuted in the category of the nourished organ; the strength of this final phase is not weak in a way that would cause pain. However, Joint Pain is caused mainly, from the residue of the Second and Third Digestion Phases, especially, the residue of the digestion phase that occurs in the Blood Vessels. Joint pain is either from simple causes, by hot, cold or dry temperament or by materialistic causes (of Humoral Temperament) i.e. predominance of blood, phlegm, yellow bile or black bile and each one of these Temperament has its specific symptoms. Sometimes the materialistic cause has a

texture, (i.e. humoral) and sometimes it has no texture (i.e. gaseous); such as in the case of malfunctioning digestion, not performing exercise, drinking too much alcohol in the hot season on an empty stomach or copulation on a full stomach and others. It’s not a condition for joint pain to have swelling. The pain that occurs at the hip joint (Sacro-iliac Joint) is called Hip Pain however the pain that extends down the leg from the hip joint is called Sciatica. The pain at the ankle of the foot or joint pain in one of the toes is called Gout, which mostly occurs in the big toe. Whereas, the pain that occurs in the hand or leg doesn’t have an exclusive name but rather it’s all under the name of Joint Pain. Successful diagnoses occurs, by determining the predominance of the existing blood humour, phlegmatic, yellow bile or black bile humors through personal consultation by examining the external and internal symptoms for each predominant humor. What is needed is to specify the cause of this disease through its symptoms whether the cause is a Simple Temperament or Compounded with Humoral Substances (Materialistic). The Simple Temperament causes are few and rare. It has pain without heaviness, or swelling or change in colour and no sign of substance.

Materialistic Causes – the first thing needed to be specified in the material cause is the condition of the category of the substance. The way of specifying this is by identifying symptoms such as, • either from colour of the affected area or the colour of its swelling with pain, and • from the touch is it cold or hot, inflamed or normal, and • either from the form of pain whether it is with strong inflammation and throbbing or with moderate inflammation and dilation or just dilation. • what benefits and calms the pain, and • the timing of the pain, and • its increase is on emptiness or fullness • or the beginning of the swelling and

whether its swelling rapidly or slowly • or no swelling at all All this needs to be taken into consideration for proper diagnosis. The type of the substance of the humor that causes the illness can be detected from the age, the habit, previous lifestyle - in eating, drinking, exercise, sedentary lifestyle and opposite to that, and involvement of the temperaments of the whole body. The indications of Blood Humour - Substance can be detected from the redness of the affected area if it was not too deep or undetected, this can also be detected by strong dilation, pain feels like pushing, heaviness and throbbing, previous lifestyle and what is known about the conditions of the Sanguine body that the symptoms are specified through examination and consultation. Physical Identifiers: This temperament has a large body and overweight with muscles and fat. The pain in the sanguine sciatica is dilated, lengthwise and has same level of pain top to bottom. The blood humour type pain is calmed instantly by the remedy of Depletion Therapy. The indications of Yellow Bile Humour - Substance can be detected by various aspects: from the excessive hotness that bothers the person touching though the affected area is small, scarcity of heaviness and dilation, scarcity of redness, tendency of the pain to be on the surface of the skin, extreme relief to cold and from the previous lifestyle. All the indications of the predominance yellow bile humour and condition of the yellow bile temperament body are determined by consultation and examination of the patient. The indications of Phlegmatic Humour - Substance can be detected by various aspects: the affected area has no colour change, or changes towards a gray colour, scarcity of inflammation, constant pain, missing symptoms of the predominance of blood humor and yellow bile. The pain subsides in perspiration, his body is full and generally overweight with lots of fat, and no muscle and other indications that are known for the predominance of Phlegmatic humor which are determined by consultation and examination of the patient. The indications of Black Bile Humour

- Substance can be detected by various aspects: hidden pain, scarcity of dilation, scarcity of the benefit of treatment, no flabbiness in the affected area, no luminosity in the color of the affected area and tends to be darker. This can be identified through the temperament of the patient and the condition of his spleen, excessive appetite, his previous lifestyle and all the indications in identifying the black bile temperament which is determined by consultation and examination of the patient.

The gaseous substance can be identified through excessive dilation without heaviness, identified by the movement of pain and previous lifestyle that produces gases. The indications of Compounded Hu

moral - Substances can be detected by various aspects: • scarcity of benefit from either hot or cold treatment, and • variation of benefit timing of treatments, • can benefit with a certain medicine some time from one type (hot) temperament medicine and sometimes can benefit from opposite (cold) temperament medicine. Mostly this happens to the bodies which are hot in temperament i.e. yellow bile temperament, who use a cold-wet procedure that produces unripe phlegm from nutrition and doing activities on fullness, therefore, the two Humors will mix. The thick Phlegm humour plunges into the joint because of the thinning of the blood from yellow bile. These patients benefited a lot and their pain mostly subsided through gentle massage from large hands - because the humor dissolves and becomes ready to be expelled. These patients also benefitted from ointments with moderate hotness while being still, since movement prevents readiness of the humor to be expelled. If the cause of the joint pain is from Simple non-moderate temper whether it is hot or cold or dry; its symptoms: occurs gradually, there will be no heaviness and no swelling at all. The special symptom of each Temper exists on the patient.” to be continued next article Next issue, Dr. Hijazi’s Fundamental Treatments for joint pain according to Humoral Medicine.
