Hundreds gathered to protest Muslim travel ban at Peace Arch Border

Sunday February 12th, 2017 Hundreds gathered at the Peace Arch Border Crossing to protest President Donald Trump executive order that bans travel into the U.S. by citizens of seven Muslim Middle East and North African countries. The rally was organized by Jean-Michelle Oblette. Oblette a Scholl teacher who just became a Canadian citizen is working to ensure the rights of all immigrants are to protected. Many faith groups were among the attendees at the event including members of the United church and White Rock Muslim Associatio­n. Asad Syed president of the White Rock Muslim Associatio­n said he is there to remind USA about the values of USA the he was inspired by when he first landed in New York about 30 Years ago. He felt USA is slipping away from the liberties that is granted under their constituti­on for all their citizens and people. He Stated that he was reminded about the last sermon of the Prophet Muhammad PBUH where “No Arab is superior to a non Arab, or White over Black”. Musa Ismail, Past president of BCMA also addressed the crowd. He Stated that we need to get rid of the ignorance of each others faith and race by “making sure we have proper education available to all people, from the Prime Minister to grade 1 students about each others faith.” MP Jenny Kwan who called for an emergency session on the travel ban in parliament said she was happy to see the Prime Minister tweet on social media about the travel ban that said your are welcome. But she stated the government of Canada needs to back its words meaning by accepting those who are impacted by the travel ban. She is hopeful the Prime Minister will address the Issues with President Donald Trump when he meets him in a state visit this coming week.
