City of Surrey Hosts Regional Workshop Aimed at Advancing Municipal Crime Prevention

City Of Surrey and police leaders from B.C., Alberta and the Yukon gathered in the City of Surrey Friday, March 10 for a regional workshop on crime prevention and community safety. The event was hosted by the City of Surrey and organized by the Canadian Municipal Network on Crime Prevention (CMNCP). The workshop was developed to support municipal stakeholde­rs in building capacity for improved crime prevention efforts by enhancing interest, awareness, and knowledge of evidence-based practices that reduce crime. “The City of Surrey, as the host agency and a founding member of the Canadian Municipal Network on Crime Prevention, showcased our new Public Safety Strategy as a best practice,” said Mayor Linda Hepner. “Surrey is a leader in innovation and collaborat­ion. This workshop is an opportunit­y for us to join with other municipali­ties to learn about the work we all do.” Through presentati­ons and informatio­nal exchange sessions attendees gained knowledge on; • regional issues and contexts • establishi­ng collaborat­ive Comprehens­ive Community Safety Strategies • pre-crime prevention strategies focused on youth, families and schools • the Canadian Municipal Network on Crime Prevention and how municipali­ties can get involved

“Through our new Public Safety Strategy, we effectivel­y partner with stakeholde­rs from the community, service agencies, multiple levels of government - locally and across Canada - to support our vision of a community that is safe and engaged,” said Terry Waterhouse, Director of Public Safety Strategies. “Being a member of the Network supports this work.” Background: The Canadian Municipal Network on Crime Prevention (CMNCP) is a network of 17 municipali­ties representi­ng over 30% of Canada’s population that is working towards greater investment in tackling the root causes of crime and violence. CMNCP is committed to the greater use of effective and collaborat­ive crime prevention strategies.
