Iqra Debates
O n May 25th, Iqra students participated in the first ever Iqra Islamic School’s Great Debates. Representatives from Iqra’s grade six and seven classes debated pertinent issues such as video game addiction, reality TV, voting, and the appropriacy of animal testing. After weeks of preparation, the students arrived with a cache of arguments, statistics, and rebuttals. The participants were confident, articulate, and respectful of their opponents. Sports Day
Today education is an all-round development of the child. In this respect, games and sports play a significant role. It is in this backdrop that Iqra School used to organize this year’s sports day. Sports Day is an eagerly awaited event in our school. It is a time of great fun and joy in the school as the days prior to the event as well as the day itself are marked by tournaments, matches and various competitions. This year we decided that our event should be held at a Bolivar Park in Surrey. This made it more exciting for the students, because they were playing on a real sports field, which made the competition that much more intense. Each year, we equally divide our students into four houses, and they represent their house for each competition. This gives the students the chance to learn to work with students of different ages, which has helped us build a strong community throughout our school. There were many events like relay races, long jump, Frisbee distance throw, egg and spoon race, plank walk, and the chicken race. Apart from teaching us good values such as, sportsmanship, proper spirit of competition, teamwork, co-operation, and discipline in the field, Iqra Sports Day makes school life lively, interesting, ing, enjoyable and memorable.

With this program the grade 5 students practiced problem solving and creative thinking. Students then spent sev- eral weeks working on creating unique and creative products with the theme of Ramadan to sell, determining prices, developing a “Dragon’s Den” style investment presentation for the school principal, and promoting their company’s products by advertising to students, parents, and other members of the school community. On May 24th, the grade 5 students successfully sold handmade products in the courtyard, creating a market bazaar style atmosphere. They sold products such as, Ramadan advent calendars, lanterns, gourmet dates, cookies, chocolate covered strawberries, drawings, Ramadan cards, treat bags, intricate henna designs, and more to students in other classes, teachers, and parents. The three classes raised over $700 in profit and have decided to donate a portion of this amount to different charities including the B.C. Children’s Hospital, the Muslim Food Bank, and the ICNA Educational Relief fund. Alhumdulillah the program was a great success Special thanks to JABC, students, teachers, staff, and parents.
