100 soldiers from UK funded training facility in Baidoa graduate

BAIDOA (HOL) - A new batch of 100 soldiers graduated today from the British funded military camp in Baidoa adding to over 2,300 the number of soldiers who have undergone training in the facility.

The British embassy in Mogadishu said the training which aims to build the capacity of the Somali National Army to enable them effectivel­y take charge of the country’s security was part of the UK’s support in ensuring a strong and profession­al armed force.

This is the sixth iteration of an eight-week training programme aimed at improving the SNA’s ability to combat the threats posed by alShabaab.The training involved a mix of theory and practice, covering defensive operations, basic command and control, dealing with improvised explosive devices, first aid, safe weapon handling, shooting, tactics, communicat­ions, first aid and human rights. UK ambassador to Somalia Kate Foster hailed the trainees noting the skills they have acquired will be instrument­al in the war against violent extremism.

“You have proved your ability to march on, shoulder to shoulder, and I admire your dedication and applicatio­n. Over the last year, Somalia has made real progress towards building its future army and in conducting operations. We’re delighted the UK has played a role in this, especially in Baidoa which is a vital location in the fight against Al Shabaab,” the ambassador said. Soldiers were trained at the British Security Training Centre (BSTC) in Baidoa. Today’s graduation brings the number of Somali National Army personnel trained by the British .
