Here’s an art portraying animals with human traits

- Kathy Golemiec Kathy Golemiec is undergoing cancer treatment and writes about her experiences each week.

How was your week, besides wet?

Mine was another one of those chemo weeks that went haywire. I was fine the first day, but the third day, oh, I was not a happy camper, I had a major headache that didn’t want to go away, I had trouble trying to keep my stomach down, so I got out the Gravol. I had no feeling in my fingertips most of the week and my pain is back in my bones, especially my shoulder and hip. But that was my own fault, I thought you could just take the steroids when needed. Not the case: you have to take them every day and to stop you have to wean off them, so when I stopped, just cut off like that, I went to La La Land.

The chemo burnt my throat and all the way down through my insides. I even had to use diaper cream to stop the burning. Before I went to bed the other night I did my teeth and rinsed my mouth and when I spit that’s when I noticed the water was red, oh, my tongue was bleeding and this is not a good thing. I finally got it to stop and used my magic mouthwash the doctor prescribed which helped a lot.

Everything tastes awful. I taught myself to make pancakes so guess what I’ve been living on. They aren’t too bad on my mouth and the maple syrup really helps. I am still using the pure Senna leaf, down to just one cup every couple of days but my bowels are working like I never thought they would or could. If you have bowel problems with not going and in pain sometime because of it try the Senna leaf tea.

I had a mammogram. They are not so bad until they try to get one in that isn’t there, a lot of pulling and tugging. Keep your fingers crossed everything is OK there.

I decided to clip Elmo’s hair. Oh my, he really has an attitude. If looks could kill I wouldn’t have to worry about the cancer. He even decided to bite me when I wanted him off the couch.

This week is the Breast Cancer Retreat at the Tim Hortons camp in Tatamagouche. And yes I’m going this year. You can contact Bonnie McCarron, the Cancer Patient Navigator for anything you need to ask, 902752-7600 ext 4922.

Did you know we also have a Pictou County Prostate Cancer Support Group? They meet in the United Commercial Travelers building in New Glasgow, behind Summer Street Industries every third Thursday of every month, wheelchair accessible.

We also have a Brain Tumor support Group that meets the third Monday of every month at East River Manor, 695 East River Rd. You can call Bonnie McCarron for these groups also.

The flea market was good this week. I have been talking to a young lady there for well over a year or so how, a fur suiter artist/costume designer. She is only 21 with talents of a wellestablished artist. Her drawings are so realistic, you can see she has been doing this for many years. She has also designed her own fur suit to go with the theme of her art work. She told me this suit represents her Fursona, a character that represents her in other artistic ways. To enjoy this hobby all you need is an interest in animals with human traits. There is a whole fan base and quite a few people make their own suits and have their own styles. So with the cooler weather coming you may get to see Zeslie Jollimore in her full suit. Stop and look at her art work. We have a lot of great artists in Nova Scotia, we should be proud of them.

Weight wise – oops, that’s the steroids…

Tip of the week: Time to get our winter coats out and get them washed for the winter. People have been saying three months to Christmas, ohhhh. Time to pack away summer clothes or give away the ones that don’t fit anymore.

I had to say goodbye to a dear friend this week, and when the reality of this disease hits me like that I have a very hard time with it. I know that she will be fine now and there will be no more pain, but the ones left behind are the ones that still feel the pain of your going. You will be missed dearly and you will be in our prayers forever.

Have a good week folks, watch out for deer, they are everywhere and not scared of anything. Also remember school zones are back on, so watch for the children.
