Grade 3 student loves volunteering

-

When London Hamilton was just six years old, her mother would find her late at night in her bedroom with the light on hours after she was supposed to be asleep.

“She was in her room working on blueprints for her lemonade stand,” says her mother Pam.

London, now 8, seems to have been born with a natural love for helping others. The lemonade stand was to raise money to fight cancer. That was a very personal cause to her at the time because her dad was diagnosed with the disease and she wanted to do everything she could to help.

She’s continued to find ways to help whether it’s through her lemonade stand raising money for sick kids or canvassing for the Heart and Stroke foundation through her school.

This fall she found a new way to give back to her community. Someone gave her some cucumbers. She wanted to learn how to make mustard pickles and then decided it’d be great to sell them and give the money to the school to buy food for the breakfast program.

While London’s parents encourage her in her efforts, they leave it to her to make the decisions.

“I just mention it and she goes off with it,” Pam said.

London has already sold out her first 20 jars of cucumbers, which sold for $5 each and is preparing for another batch with jars and cucumbers that were donated by other people in the community.

“I like helping,” she said when asked why she does it.

She said it was fun making the pickles.

Once that’s done she plans to make some grape jelly to sell to get money to donate to her school library.

“She just loves volunteering,” Pam said. “She’s a pretty amazing little girl.”
