Girl Guides, Sparks selling cookies today

- BY SUEANN MUSICK

Glenna Oldford knows a good thing when she tastes it.

And selling it is no problem either.

That is why when she mentioned that the mint cookies are for sale again from the Girl Guides of Canada, she was one of the most popular people in the room.

This Saturday, her granddaughter’s Sparks group will be selling the mint cookies at Proudfoots Home Hardware in Stellarton beginning at 10 a.m. Other Girl Guides groups are expected to be in other areas.

“They are a hot commodity,” said Oldford, who has long history with the Girl Guides of Canada Association and is now helping her daughter Tanya lead the newly formed First Stellarton Sparks.

She said the first order of cookies quickly sold out and now a second order has arrived. Profit from the cookie sales goes to supporting guiding activities in both the local community and across the county.

Oldford said it also gives the girls a few important life lessons.

“It is good PR for Girl Guides of Canada but it’s a good experience for the kids,” she said. “They learn to deal with the public, gain some self confidence, they are introduced to money and realize things need to be paid and accounted for. It helps them directly and indirectly.”

The mint cookies sell for $5 a box. There are more than six million Girl Guide cookies sold each year. In April, a second fundraising campaign involves the chocolate and vanilla cookies.

Girl Guides has been selling cookies since 1927. It all began when a Regina Girl Guide leader baked and packaged cookies as a simple way to raise money. It introduced its mint cookies in 1995.
