Celebrating diversity
World becomes a smaller place as New Glasgow holds annual Culture Days
The Town of New Glasgow kicked off Culture Days on Friday with a social media campaign, music and cake on the riverfront.
“It’s an opportunity to celebrate diversity, creativity and cultures in our community,” said marketing director Kim Dickson.
“To share the message that we’re proud of our community, we’re united and we do celebrate diversity.”
Dickson said events like this recognize arts, creativity, multiculturalism, heritage, diversity and inclusion.
Lacey Morrell-Pierre was excited to perform at the event because multiculturalism is important to her. “I believe in getting to know other cultures and making the world a smaller place,” she told the crowd gathered for the celebrations.
The town’s race relations and anti-discrimination committee came up with the idea for the event to mark Culture Days and celebrate inclusion, multiculturalism and different heritages.
Activities for Culture Days continue in the town all weekend, with a pottery demonstration and exhibit taking place on Friday night, food sampling and music at the New Glasgow Farmers Market on Saturday and a free film showing at Glasgow Square Theatre on Sunday.
More than 10 million Canadians have participated in 40,000 Culture Days activities hosted by artists, cultural organizations and groups in 900 different Canadian cities and towns since 2010.
