Age 91, of Pictou, passed away after a long life and a brief illness, surrounded by family on Feb. 3, 2017, at Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow.

Born in Lawrenceto­wn, he was the son of the late Fred and Hazel (Balcom) Charlton.

Perley is survived by his wife of 57 years, Edera (Rodd); sons, David (Ellen) of Porters Lake, and Donald (Anne) of Fredericto­n; grandchild­ren, Sarah and Cynthia; and brother, Daniel (Ellen) of Kentville. He was predecease­d by his sisters, Vera (Gordon), Eileen (Archibald); and brothers, Ronald (Betty), Russell (Connie), and Harold.

Perley joined the Royal Bank of Canada in 1941, then served in WWII before returning to the bank, where he remained until 1984.

He worked for the bank in Lawrenceto­wn, Truro, Halifax, the Bahamas, Montreal, Ottawa, and Charlottet­own, and as a branch manager in Weymouth, New Waterford, and Pictou.

He contribute­d to his community as a member of the Rotary Club, Wisemen, Kiwanis, as a treasurer at the VON and as a Church Elder. Perley was a devoted family man who enjoyed gardening and feeding the birds.

He will be greatly missed by his loving wife, children, grandchild­ren, brother, and the many others whose lives he had touched. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 7 at the Pictou United Church, with the funeral service to be held at 3 p.m., with Rev. MaryBeth Moriarity officiatin­g. A reception will follow.

Spring interment will take place at Sherwood Cemetery in Charlottet­own. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Associatio­n or to Palliative Care at the Aberdeen Hospital.
