Pictou County Community Orchestra performing two shows
An orchestra featuring both youth performers and musicians with more than 60 years of playing experience is presenting two concerts of “mid-winter melodies to lighten the spirits of music lovers.”
The Pictou County Community Orchestra is performing on Saturday, Feb. 18, at 3 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church on MacLean Street in New Glasgow as well as a second concert at Truro’s St. Andrew’s United Church on King Street on Sunday, Feb. 19, at 3:30 p.m.
The PCCO, now in its 28th year, will play a variety of light classical selections by Mozart, Beethoven, Ketelbey and others. A special selection that was written to honour the memory of local musician Fleur Mainville will be offered by PCCO and will feature local violinist Hayley MacLeod. Titled Music Meets the Bow, the piece was written by pipe major Robbie MacInnis and arranged for PCCO by the group’s conductor Ken Henderson.
The orchestra rehearses weekly in Westville through September to May period and draws its members from all over northeastern Nova Scotia, including those who travel from Antigonish, Colchester and Halifax counties as well as from all over Pictou County.
The orchestra says one of their strengths is the diversity of ages and experience levels of the members, noting the addition this year of student members studying with MacLeod as well as seasoned players.
The St. James Brass Quintet will be joining PCCO for the concert in New Glasgow, while the St. Andrews United Church Choir will join in on Truro’s concert.
