Parking meter money donated to food bank
Monies collected from parking meters throughout downtown New Glasgow by the town during December were presented recently to the Pictou County Food Bank.
New Glasgow Mayor Nancy Dicks and Police Chief Delaney Chisholm presented the cheque for $1289.57 on behalf of the community.
Dicks said the community was very generous with their donations.
“All donations were voluntary so, once again, the people of our town and region have given selflessly for the Pictou County Food Bank.
There are many worthwhile charities and non-profit groups in our community, yet the residents of Pictou County come out time after time to support all of them. We are very pleased that the Pictou County Food Bank will receive this boost at time when it is most needed.”
The food bank welcomed the donation. “All donations of food and cash made to the food bank are welcomed and appreciated,” said Jane Taylor, chair of the Pictou County Food Bank. “At various times throughout the year, food donations can be sparse.” She said cash donations such as this one from the town ensure shelves are kept at a level to meet the needs of people requiring emergency food assistance. The Pictou East Food Bank has been providing emergency assistance to about 650 clients during the past few months.
“It’s because of the continued support they receive from the community that we are able to help our neighbours in a time of need,” said George MacLellan, a Pictou County Food Bank board of directors member on hand for the cheque presentation. “It is the time of year when giving is generally down from the tremendous support the food bank receives during the Christmas season. Also, it is a time when demands are higher due to higher heating costs and also a slowdown in seasonal work.”
Other community organizations have received the donation in the past.
