Florists do their best when one of their busiest days of the year collides with a heartless blizzard
Snow doesn’t stop Valentine’s Day, but it does slow it down.
Local florists were open and delivering, but they say the Monday blizzard that lingered into Tuesday impacted them.
After receiving approximately 50 centimetres leading into one of the biggest days of the year for flower sales, Tom Makin, co-owner of McKean’s Flowers in New Glasgow, said it was difficult to get deliveries around, but they had “several trucks on the go.”
“Florists are tough and resilient. We’re used to this stuff.”
Makin, who operates the business with his wife Suzanne, said they seem to be receiving a lot of walk-in customers who are surprised they’re open as many businesses were closed Tuesday.
It’s an important day for McKean’s to be open, he said.
Zelda Crossman, who operates Zelda’s Flower Studio in New Glasgow, said she started shovelling out her business at 7 a.m. “so that people would have their Valentines.”
She said the storm was impacting them, but “the roses are in the fridge and we’re here to help whoever comes, whoever can get out of their driveway.”
They were doing deliveries, but acknowledged that was difficult because not all driveways are cleared.
She also noted some businesses weren’t open Tuesday, making it impossible for some deliveries to be accepted and they may be pushed to today.
Despite the challenges the blizzard had posed, Crossman was finding the silver lining.
“I love doing the roses,” she said as she arranged a bouquet filled with many colours.
“Valentine’s (Day) is a lot of work, but it’s very enjoyable.”
