Council expresses concern over Trenton Connector intersection
County council wants to know exactly what the province’s transportation department is doing to improve an intersection in Abercrombie.
Council recently wrote to Nova Scotia Transportation and Infrastructure and Renewal expressing its concern about a recent fatal collision in the area and asking that the department look into making the intersection of the Trenton Connector and Abercrombie Road safer for motorists.
TIR Minister Geoff MacLellan responded by saying the province conducts periodic reviews of all its roads and bridges.
“I have instructed my staff to review this intersection to ensure that it meets all our current design and policy requirements, “he said. “Additionally, I have also asked that the area be reviewed to determine if there are any additional improvements that may be warranted and could be considered for future projects.”
Coun. Larry Turner said this response wasn’t good enough for him or his constituents, and made a motion that council send back another letter “demanding more specific details” about the review.
In December, Turner asked that province consider redesigning the intersection to make it safer for motorists. He said such changes could include rumble strips, four way stops or a roundabout.
Council unanimously supported the motion, and Warden Robert Parker agreed that something needs to be done soon.
“When you are coming down the hill, there has be something more to get the traffic to slow down,” the warden said. “You have to make a quick decision to brake hard or go forward. We have to continue to press this.”
