HOPEWELL – Margaret Evelyn MacFarlane, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 3, 2017 at Valley View Villa with her daughter by her side. Born on June 7, 1918, in Merigomish, she was a daughter of the late William and Florence (Roy) Smith.

Mom was a resident of Glen Brea Senior’s Apartments, Hopewell for 33 years. She was a very active member of First Presbyteri­an Church, from singing in the choir to serving suppers and catering. She was a very busy and active lady in the Women’s Institute Society; L.O.B.A. Acadia Sisters #609, Westville; Branch #75 Eureka Legion Auxiliary; Crystal Fountain #11 Rebekah Lodge; Ladies Auxiliary to Eureka and District Fire Dept.; Founding member of the Hopewell Heritage Foot Bridge and Ceilidh.

Mom was bestowed the title of Most Worshipabl­e Honourary Member of the Grand Lodge of Canada L.O.B.A. She was also a great knitter, knitting for family and friends and for 80 years for the Red Cross. Mom was not only a mom to her own children, but “Mommy Marg” to a lot of children she looked after, Burke children, and was also a midwife.

She will be deeply missed by her children, Edna Lays (Billy Webb), Marian (Gary) McMullen, and Billy MacFarlane; grandchild­ren, Jim Lays, Roy Lays (Alisha and their son Avery); Derek Lays, Michael McMullen, Diane McMullen (her children Maddie and David); sisters, Janet Thomson and Edith (Terry) Iceton, Don Mills, Ont.; brothers Roy (Noreen) Smith, Merigomish, Harold (Marian) Smith, Halifax; several nieces and nephews; and a very special friend Wayne Ross, Hopewell.

She was predecease­d by her husband Kenneth (1982); sonin-law Ronnie Lays (1997); her sisters Dorothy (her twin) and Winnifred Smith; and brother in-law Bill Thomson (2014).

Margaret is resting at Eagles Funeral Home, Westville with visiting on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The Crystal Fountain #11 Rebekah Lodge will conduct a service 6:30 Monday at the funeral home. Her funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 7 from First Presbyteri­an Church, Hopewell. Burial will be at a later date. A reception will follow the funeral service at the Eureka Fire Hall. Family flowers only.
