This condition is one of the most common behavioural problems in children. We typically think of that little boy who is not paying attention, very impulsive, has academic challenges and behavioural problems. At what severity does one begin to question this “condition?” Is this something that is genetic or is it due to stresses in their everyday lives?

After reading through some of the literature I’d like to forward a few things to those of you experiencing these challenges. Begin by eliminating dyes and sugar from the diet. Try to keep to a minimum. If the child is showing a lot of anxiety think about herbal teas containing lemon balm, chamomile, passionflower and valerian. Omega 3 fatty acids containing the DHA is important. A good multi-vitamin taken with a meal is very important for their general health.

For those of you who cannot sleep, many are using melatonin so take some time and look this hormone up. Removing wheat from the diet, and sometimes removing all grains is beneficial and has some positive effects for some children. Magnesium may aid in calming the nervous system.

Homeopathic medicine can be very helpful for this condition. A very detailed case is required by a homeopath or naturopathic doctor.

Regarding food, start with small changes such as using quinoa or rice pasta instead of wheat-based pasta. Ezekiel bread is a great alternative to whole wheat bread as are rice and quinoa crackers. If children are experiencing numerous enlarged tonsils and ear infection try removing cow’s milk and replace with almond milk. Excessive digestive gas and constipation or diarrhea can have an impact on the nervous system and affect mood and problemsolving skills.

Be sure they are getting daily physical activity and calming activities an hour before bedtime. It all plays a role in their ability to focus. Another option is neurotransmitter testing which is available.

This test helps to measure the imbalances in brain chemistry. Live blood analysis is beneficial as this can show digestive disturbances and much more.
